PCOS, Miscarriage & Management

PCOS known as Poly-Cystic Ovary Syndrome is a condition where the ovaries develop multiple cysts (follicles) due to the presence of Leydig cells within the ovaries, leftover during the early development of the ovaries. Instead of releasing and maturing one follicle at a time, multiple follicles are developing at the same time, causing them to develop into multiple cysts embedded in the ovaries. This can easily be seen with an ultrasound. Surprisingly, PCOS is considered to be one of the most common endocrinopathies amongst women.

Characteristics:

  1. Menstrual Irregularities:
  2. Delayed Menses
  3. Amenorrhea
  4. Oligomenorrhea (less than 9 menstrual periods)
  • Hyperandrogenism (High blood testosterone)
  • Acne
  • Excessive facial and body hair
  • Deeper, rougher voice
  • Insulin Resistance with increased risks of the followings:
  • Obesity
  • High-blood pressure
  • Pre-diabetes

Having PCOS can affect your ability to conceive and also sustain a full-term pregnancy because of how ovarian functions are also altered. The follicles are now being released irregularly and also did not have the chance to fully mature, which means they are now of a lower quality, which further means successful fertilization is much more difficult to take place. Due to the possibility of amenorrhea, sometimes no follicles are released at all.

If you are fortunate enough to get pregnant with this condition, you are met with another wall: Corpus Luteum Insufficiency. During pregnancy, in the first trimester, the progesterone secretion depends critically on the corpus luteum. After week 12, the placenta will take over the role of secreting progesterone. With PCOS, the corpus luteum did not manage to develop and mature as it normally would, causing defects and abnormalities in both shape and function. If progesterone levels are not optimal in the first 12 weeks, there is a high risk of pregnancy loss, and if they are left undiagnosed and untreated, you will develop an immunological factor that will lead your subsequent pregnancies to end in miscarriage progressively earlier each time.

For treatment, we conduct a specialized surgical method using 3D Laparoscopy to extract and remove the Leydig cells in your ovaries, which we know is the root cause of your PCOS. By removing these abnormal tissues in your ovaries, upon recovery, the patient will notice symptoms subside and regular menses once again, all of which is crucial for a healthy, long-term pregnancy. If you do have an immunological factor, you will receive treatment using our patented immunotherapy. With these 2 treatments conducted, pregnancy can definitely be achieved.
