Does sex during your period lead to miscarriage risks? – Antai Hospital

Menstruation is part of a natural monthly cycle, where the inner lining of the uterus (commonly referred to the endometrium) sheds in anticipation of a potential pregnancy. If no implantation occurs, then the thickened inner lining sheds and exits via the cervix and into the vaginal canal. This becomes the menstrual blood that we know.

The menstrual cycles:

  • Menses phase: This is when the shedding of the inner lining of the uterus occurs. The bleeding should on average last for 5 days. Any shorter or longer, may be due to underlying concerns that you should address with your doctor.
  • Follicular phase: This takes place from day 6 to 14. Estrogen and Progesterone spike and rise during this phase and causes the endometrium to begin thickening. Ovarian follicles also mature and develop during this phase.
  • Ovulation: Roughly around day-14 or day-15 of the cycle, this is when the hormone Lutenizing hormone spikes, triggering the release of an ovarian follicle into the fallopian tube. The follicle is also known as an egg cell.
  • Luteal phase: This phase comes directly after ovulation, roughly day-15 or day-16. During this period, the egg cells is travelling toward the thickening endometrium via the fallopian tube for implantation to take place. However, if no sperm cell fuses with the egg cell, hormonal levels begin dropping and causes the shedding of the inner lining, into what we know as the period. This cycle repeats monthly.

How does intercourse during menses cause a miscarriage?

During the menses phase, the shedding of the inner lining exposes the uterine veins beneath the endometrium. Intercourse during this period, protected or not, carries a risk of sperm cell entering the uterine cavity. There’s a significant risk of the sperm cell entering via the exposed veins, into the broader systemic circulatory system. The risk is low however very probable.

Upon entering into the circulatory system, the immune system makes a recognition of the foreign material carrying paternal genes (the sperm cells is an antigen in this case) and proceeds to develop specific antibodies known as “anti-embryonic antibodies” that can risk your future pregnancies with the same partner. The immune system develops these antibodies as a form of memory to remember the antigen, and if it encounters it again, it deploys the very same antibodies to clear the antigen.

If pregnancy is achieved with the same partner, the maternal immune response activates the same antibodies to target the newly formed embryo. Depending on the levels of the antibodies, the pregnancy loss can happen as soon as within 2-3 weeks of gestation, but commonly they occur within 12 weeks gestation. This is known as an immunological miscarriage or immunological spontaneous abortion. This form of miscarriage accounts for up to 70% of unexplained recurrent miscarriage, and can in fact be treated here at Antai Hospital.

Antai Hospital specializes in the diagnoses and treatment of this form of recurrent miscarriage for over the past 25 years, with our internationally patented test kit and immunotherapy that specifically treats immunological recurrent miscarriage.
