Vaginal Atresia: Cause & Treatment – Antai Hospital
Vaginal atresia is a rare female reproductive tract malformation, where the urogenital sinus is absent in the formation of the lower segment of the vagina. Medically speaking, this condition is also known as the complete or partial absence of the vagina. Partial absence refers to when the vagina is closed.
Vaginal Atresia is a subset of MRKH syndrome, as a disorder of the congenital absence of the uterus and parts of the vagina and has the same underlying cause: a defect in the fusion and development of the Mullerian Ducts. However, for vaginal atresia, the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tube are all present as well as the upper parts of the vaginal canal connecting with the cervix.
In rare cases, this condition can be an acquired one due to prolonged vaginal inflammation and trauma.
Cause
Most cases of vaginal atresia is associated with the MRKH syndrome, and is caused by a defect in the development of the paramesonephric ducts during embryogenesis, making it a congenital defect. These vaginas are covered with excessive fibrous tissues that must be surgical removed to restore morphology and function.
Symptoms
- Going through adolescence/ puberty without menstruation but experiences periodic abdominal pains
- Difficulty in intercourse or completely unable to engage in intercourse
- Vaginal opening not present or too small
Examination for vaginal atresia
Vaginal Atresia is commonly diagnosed during birth and during regular examinations of the baby.
For patients who have not been diagnosed earlier, we will, via the anal rectum canal, conduct an examination of the uterus and ovaries. Furthermore, an electrochemiluminescence analysis of endocrine hormones will be required to check hormonal disorders. Lastly, we will conduct a vaginal 4D color doppler ultrasound examination and a chromosomal analysis of the patient.
