Recurrent Miscarriage – Breakdown of causes and treatment
Recurrent miscarriage or Recurrent Spontaneous Abortions (RSAs) affect 1-3% of all couples in their pregnancy journeys. In 2020, the numbers are between the range of 10,000-15,000 people affected by this, and the data sees a linear progression, increasing as the years progress.
- Immunological factor (presence of anti-embryonic antibodies)
Antai Hospital has discovered that the among all the different causes that affect patients, by far the most common cause across the board is an underlying immunological factor. Many people are unaware they even have this because many hospitals do not provide this diagnosis and treatment. Currently, Antai Hospital owns the licensing and rights of the diagnosis and treatment of the immunological recurrent spontaneous abortions (i-RSA) on the grounds of being the inventor.
According to our research and patient case study, most of our patients who develop an immunological factor that led to a pregnancy loss, they all share a common history of undergoing an induced abortion.
- Hormonal Imbalance – Progesterone
Hormonal imbalance during pregnancy is known to cause problems in preserving the pregnancy. Namely an imbalance in Progesterone caused by an underlying Corpus Luteum Insufficiency. During the first 12 weeks, before the placenta is fully formed and functioning, the corpus luteum carries the function of producing Pg for the development of the pregnancy. Low progesterone in the first 12 weeks can lead to:
- Increased sensitivity in uterine smooth muscles, causing more contractions.
- Under-developed of trophoblast cells of the embryo, causing bleeding or implantation problems.
Treatment is a relatively straightforward protocol involving progesterone supplementation, depending on how much the patient requires or is lacking.
- Anatomical factor
Anatomical factors means that the cause involves the anatomy of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes etc of the reproductive system. The 2 most common anatomical factor is a septate uterus and naïve uterus, which are both uterine malformations that can be diagnosed and treated here at Antai. Furthermore, ovarian defects such as PCOS, blocked fallopian tubes, presence of uterine fibroids or cysts, are all considered anatomical factors as well. They either cause a low quality embryo formation, or there arises competition of nutrients, blood-flow and space with the developing embryo.
- Genetic factor (rare)
Chromosomal abnormality means there arises a chromosomal defect within the embryonic cells and can be caused by an array of different causes. Some are treatable by adjusting the internal and external environment of the mother and her surrounding environment during the pregnancy. And some are untreatable such as the arise of polyploid leading to lethal mutations and spontaneous termination of the pregnancy.
- Bacterial or Viral infections
Miscarriages caused by infections of pathogens are commonly due to contracting them via the vagina/cervix, and the upward migration of these pathogens towards the womb. The cervical neck does possess a mucous barrier that protects the womb from such infections, however, certain pathogens are able to overcome the barrier by releasing secretions that damage or erode the mucous barrier. These pathogens can come from an ongoing HPV infection, STDs, vaginitis, infection of the cervix, bacterial vaginosis etc. There may be other causes but in general they arise from the inflammation and infection within the reproductive system that enables it to affect the pregnancy in close proximity. To prevent and treat such an occurrence, an emphasis on a systemic prenatal check-up should be placed.
