New High Risk HPV Infections: Prevention & Treatment – Antai Hospital

Introduction

HPV, known as the Human Papilloma Virus, is one of the most transmitted STIs (sexually transmitted infections). It is commonly transmitted via sexual conduct including vaginal, oral, and anal intercourse. If you are sexually active at any given moment, you have a 50% chance of being infected with HPV, this is how common it is. However, 90% of HPV infections are considered harmless and cause no symptoms, because it is likely caused by low-risk HPV strains. If symptoms do arise, they develop papilloma’s (warts) around the mouth and genitalia regions.

Over time, your immune system will be able to overcome the HPV infection and you will no longer be HPV positive. We do recommend getting vaccinated with Gardasil 9, which protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. These vaccinations are a priority as they protect against high-risk HPVs that can develop into cancers such as Cervical cancer, Oropharyngeal cancers, anal cancers, penile cancers, vaginal cancers, vulvar cancer, Head Neck Cancers (HNC) etc.

New High Risk HPV strains

New high-risk strains include 26, 35, 39, 51, 53, 56, 59, 66, 68, 82, which there are no vaccines available, which is why we emphasize patients to receive treatment, to prevent it from developing into cancer later in life. Please see treatment section to see our specialized & effective treatment method here at Antai Hospital.

Symptoms

High Risk HPV strains rarely causes any symptoms. However, it is possible to develop precancerous lesions at the site of infection for example in the cervical neck or genitalia. This may cause itchiness and light bleeding. For more severe cases, there may be swelling and pain.

Diagnosis

Currently, HPV test is done by detecting the presence of abnormal cellular changes and genital warts. Primarily, Pap smear is administered to women who are screening for cervical cancer or infections of HPV-16,18. The test detects the presence of the HPV virus, and you will require follow-up monitoring and further testing to confirm which exact strains they are.

You may also need a colposcopy and biopsy for further analysis of the abnormal cells.
