Can Duphaston Prevent Miscarriages? – Antai Hospital

Can Duphaston prevent miscarriage?

Duphaston (Dydrogesterone) is a commonly administered medication that is used to prevent threatened early miscarriages and recurrent miscarriages. It is a medicine that contains progestin, which acts and function very similarly to the female reproductive hormone: Progesterone. Duphaston is highly effective when treating threatened miscarriages that are caused by low progesterone secretions by the mother. In such circumstances, Duphaston can help supplement and compensate for the low levels of Progesterone in the mother’s body, thus vaginal bleeding will stop usually within a week and a healthy full-term pregnancy can be sustained. (Note that Duphaston has to be supplemented since ovulation and gradually stopped by the 3rd month of pregnancy as the placenta fully forms)

But for threatened miscarriages caused by other factors that are not related to Progesterone Insufficiency, it will be 100% ineffective and it will not do anything to stop the threatened miscarriage from progressing into a inevitable miscarriage.

Duphaston is also an oral medication that comes in the form of tablets, although the dosage clear and fixed: usually at 4 tablets as a starting dosage and followed by 1 every 8 hours. Oral medications do not carry the effective dose required due to the first pass effect of the digestive system. And outcome can be different for each patient depending on age, race, body weight etc. The most accurate way of administering Progesterone has to be done via intramuscular injection, where the therapeutic effects are direct and can be seen almost instantly.

Furthermore, overdose and underdose of Duphaston can bring adverse complications for your pregnancy. Overdose, thought it might stop the threatened miscarriage, leads to placental adhesion, where it is deeply rooted into the basal layer of the endometrium causing complications during labour. There is also a high risk of feminization of a male fetus.

Underdose of Duphaston will however, not be able to solve your progesterone insufficiency, causing your threatened miscarriage to become a miscarriage.

You must first have your early threatened miscarriage accurately diagnosed, and once the underlying cause is determined, treatment must be administered according to the cause of disease. There are multiple factors that can lead to a potential threatened miscarriage which include the following:

  • Uterine anatomical diseases including Endometriosis, Adenomyosis
  • Uterine malformation like Septate Uterus, Naïve Uterus.
  • Nutritional Deficiency
  • Hormonal Imbalance or Deficiency including Low Progesterone, Low HCG etc.
  • Immunological Factors
  • Placental Disease
  • Umbilical Cord Abnormalities

The only way to effectively prevent threatened miscarriages are to first and foremost accurately diagnosed the underlying causes, and then administer the correct treatment. If you are taking Duphaston to prevent a threatened miscarriage, please make sure the cause is diagnosed to be Progesterone Insufficiency.

Duphaston is a commonly administered medication for treating and preventing threatened early miscarriages. It contains progestin, which acts and functions just like natural progesterone that is secret in the woman’s body during pregnancy. Duphaston is only effective only if the cause is due to Low Progesterone Secretion, and furthermore it will only be effective if it is done before ovulation and administered all the way until the first trimester. Duphaston is also an oral medication so its therapeutic dosage will also be affected due to the first pass metabolism, and oral medication also is not specific enough to patient needs, end up being ineffective.  The specificity of the dosage is very important because underdose will not stop the threatened miscarriage, while overdosage will cause placental adhesions and even feminization of the male fetus.  Duphaston cannot be used to treat other causes of a threatened early miscarriage such as uterine malformation, immunological factors, nutritional deficiency, uterine diseases etc.
