The Caesarean Section is an emergency surgical protocol, for the purpose of protecting mother and child, that is used to deliver babies through an incision of the mother’s abdomen. A C-section is required if vaginal delivery is proven to be difficult or causing complications to both mother and baby, reasons may include fetal distress, umbilical cord around the baby, breech birth, multiple-child pregnancy etc. If done correctly, it can reduce the growth of adhesions within the pelvic cavity, and the incision scar can be masked.
A C-section is performed under effective us anesthesia and is done by making an incision under the lower abdominal wall and on the lower uterine wall. The mother can avoid long hours of labor and birth trauma on the cervix and vagina. Despite the scarring on the outer abdomen, over time it will fully recover. Here at Antai, we will recommend using our water birth technique which will give you a most painless and profound birthing experience, however you can request a C-section or a VBAC, our doctors will approve it upon assessment.
Under what circumstances do we need a C-section?
- Fetal distress
- Maternal request
- Fetus is stuck in the cervical opening and labor is not progressing
- Multiple babies
- Umbilical Cord looped around baby
- Previous C-section
- Advanced age mother (>35)
- Small pelvic outlet
- Prolonged pregnancy
- Breech birth
Caesarean section is divided into two types according to the type of uterine incision: longitudinal incision of uterine body and transverse incision of lower uterine segment. According to whether the peritoneum is cut or not, it can be divided into intra-peritoneum and extraperitoneum.
Risks of a C-section
The risk of maternal & fetal death via C-section is very low, 10 in 100,000, however if not done the correct way, can lead to postoperative adhesions which can affect your fertility in the future. Some mothers experience PTSD and depression after going through a C-section possibly due to factors such as C-section being a highly invasive and intrusive procedure, first time being in labor, pain, and other psychological issues.
Infections arising from the incision at the surgical site can also occur. This is known as postpartum infection and is the most common cause of maternal death after C-section. The use of sufficient antibiotics and proper surgical behavior from the doctors can significantly reduce occurrence of infections.
Here at Antai Hospital, to avoid potential complications and at the same time minimizing risk, we conduct an extraperitoneal caesarean section, that does not enter the abdominal cavity, and remove the baby from the uterus, with very little pollution to the pelvic and abdominal cavity. The mother may experience some abnormal bowel movement for a few days, but recovery will be swift. She will given some medication to help with the inflammation and the pains as well.
