Adenomyosis and Recurrent Miscarriage
Blood-insufficiency-related miscarriage is one of the most common and preventable types of miscarriages. Blood-insufficiency during pregnancy can be caused by several conditions such as uterine fibroids, tumours, Adenomyosis, etc. This article will focus solely on Adenomyosis and how it can lead to recurrent miscarriages and infertility if left untreated.
Antai Hospital uses our highly specialized 3D- Laparoscopy to effectively treat Adenomyosis, in essence, to prevent future recurrent miscarriages from happening.
What is Adenomyosis, and how does it affect your pregnancy?
Adenomyosis is a medical condition where the cells and tissues that usually grow and line the endometrium of the uterus end up growing in the uterine wall (myometrium), leading to thickening of the uterus.
Despite growing in the wrong location, these endometrial tissues are still fully functional and will also go through changes like the endometrium layer during a menstrual cycle. They will also thicken and bleed. Therefore, one of the most common symptoms for patients with this condition is excruciating menstrual pains, known as Dysmenorrhea. Furthermore, not all this misplaced tissue will shed during menstruation. Some will instead harden, and overtime form solidified blood clots or scar tissues that turn into lesions, worsening the conditions.
Medical diagnosis has determined that the uterus of patients with Adenomyosis share the following characteristics:
- The uterus has a larger shape and volume than average.
- The uterus has a slightly circular shape instead of a normal “pear shape.”
- Due to the endometrial tissues growing in the myometrium and overtime forming lesions, the overall uterus is more rigid and hardened.
The presence of lesions caused by Adenomyosis affects your pregnancy because:
- It competes for nutrients from your fetus
- It competes for blood flow with your fetus
- It also competes for space in the uterine cavity
These factors combined will affect the growth and development of the fetus, leading to recurrent early miscarriages and fetal demise if left untreated.
However, it is essential to note that:
In less severe Adenomyosis cases, patients can still get pregnant, but usually, it ends up in an inevitable miscarriage or fetal demise caused by blood-insufficiency.
In severe cases of Adenomyosis, patients not only experience severe menstrual pain, but they are not even able to get pregnant in the first place. (Infertility)
How do I know if I have Adenomyosis?
Patients who have Adenomyosis share a common medical history of:
- Dysmenorrhea (the pain is due to uterine hypoxia caused by blood flow insufficiency)
- Recurrent miscarriages
During pregnancy, some of the common signs and symptoms of Adenomyosis are:
- Light bleeding of the vagina
- Clinical diagnosis of steady, normal levels of Progesterone and dropping levels of HCG. (A distinct sign of a blood-insufficiency threatened miscarriage)
- Chronic abdominal pains
The above mentions are all possible signs and symptoms of Adenomyosis and can cause a potential threatened miscarriage. But for an accurate diagnosis, a proper B-ultrasound scan needs to be done further to determine the presence and the precise location of the lesions, if any; to confirm if it is either Endometriosis or Adenomyosis.
This is because Adenomyosis can usually occur together or lead to another disease: Endometriosis, where the tissues are now found growing in the ovaries, a condition known as “Chocolate Cysts.” Find out more about Endometriosis and chocolate cysts here.
Antai Therapy for Adenomyosis
All over the world, the conventional and recommended treatment for Adenomyosis is hysterectomy, which means the complete removal of the uterus. (= cutting out the uterine wall may cause severe bleeding, so might as well just remove the uterus, instead will lead to infertility)
This goes against our Antai philosophy of “Protecting the uterus, say No to castration” and highlights our concern about the detrimental damage done to women who undergo a hysterectomy. We understand the importance of the uterus for a woman and will certainly not use hysterectomy as the method of treatment.
Our Antai Therapy is:
Adenomyosis is an organic disease and can only be treated via surgery. Our highly skilled surgeons will enter the pelvic cavity via our state-of-the-art and minimally invasive 3D-specialized Laparoscopy and remove the lesions growing on your uterus. Using surgical scissors equipped on the Laparoscope and our other in-house specialized medical equipment & high skilled team that is specialized in our Laparoscopy treatment unlikely to fail), we carefully make incisions into the myometrium and cut out the lesions. Once removed, the uterine wall’s smooth muscles will be carefully and precisely stitched to promote faster healing.
During this stage, if you also have a history of induced abortion or miscarriages, you will be tested for anti-embryonic antibodies to prevent the occurrence of immunological miscarriage. If you test positive, we will administer our patented and highly effective immunotherapy to counteract the anti-embryonic antibodies, ensuring a healthy pregnancy. Click here to find out more about our immunotherapy.
The treatment that Antai Hospital provides depends on your diagnosis. If it is determined that there are more underlying complications or disease that are causing your recurrent miscarriages, Antai will also treat your condition accordingly:
- Single-factor miscarriage (meaning you only have Adenomyosis)
- Proceed with our 3D-Laparoscopy treatment.
- Multiple-factor miscarriage (Adenomyosis & Immunity Factors)
- Proceed with our 3D-Laparoscopy treatment.
- Antai Immunotherapy to treat your immunity factors.
- Complex Miscarriage (Adenomyosis, Immunity Factors & Chocolate Cysts)
- Proceed with our 3D-Laparoscopy treatment.
- Antai Immunotherapy to treat your immunity factors.
- Progesterone supplementary
In 6-20months depends on lesion severity or surgery 范围, post-surgery, the patients’ uterus will be fully healed (no more bleeding and no more menstrual pain), and normal uterus size will be restored. Patients can get pregnant soon after and have healthy pregnancies. Post-laparoscopy, most hospitals will always recommend a C-section birth for subsequent pregnancies because they believe the uterus is no longer as secure and robust as it was.
We here at Antai instead strongly recommend natural birth/water birth because the uterus has gotten much healthier and stronger (healing of smooth uterine muscles) over time.
**Please note that If you are diagnosed with Adenomyosis during pregnancy, depending on the severity, it is highly likely that it will result in an inevitable miscarriage. (because it is an organic disease)
