Recurrent Miscarriage & Anti-phospholipid Antibodies
This theory suggests antiphospholipid antibodies (a group of immune proteins) are responsible for a rare autoimmune condition known as Antiphospholipid Syndrome. This condition is also referred to as Hughes Syndrome. It suggests that women who have high levels of these antibodies wrongly produced by the body can lead to recurrent miscarriage by cause of formations of excessive blood clotting which proceed to interrupt and obstruct fetal blood flow, which leads to fetal demise or a miscarriage. Treatment provided for women diagnosed with this condition is the administration of anti-coagulants such as heparin and aspirin.
These antibodies are specific and bind to phospholipids; although it is still unknown what the full process is, they significantly increase the risk of blood clotting.
If you have high APS, you may develop complications such as:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Arterial Thrombosis
- Blood Clotting
This article seeks to challenge this theory/notion that APS is directly responsible for the occurrence of recurrent miscarriages.
APS is not the cause for recurrent miscarriages for the following two significant points:
Firstly, AP-Abs are not considered to be the specific diagnosis for recurrent miscarriages. They are several other diseases/conditions that are also associated with high levels of AP-Abs, which include: pregnancy-induced migraines, fevers, high blood pressure, heart conditions, the common flu, even Covid-19. Furthermore, studies also indicate that women generally have higher levels of AP-Abs compared to their male counterparts and it is exceptionally high amongst pregnant women. It is simply theorized that these antiphospholipid are the trigger for recurrent miscarriages, but there lacks significant clinical data and specificity to support this claim.
Secondly, once pregnant women are diagnosed with APS, they soon received treatment that we believe will not only worsen her condition but will further increase the risks of a potential miscarriage. Most often, doctors will administer anticoagulants such as heparin, aspirin, and warfarin to reduce the coagulation of the blood. When a woman is in the midst of her pregnancy, she is naturally in a state of hypercoagulation, also known as pregnancy-induced hypercoagulability. This is a physiological adaptive mechanism that helps the mother heal faster in case of any trauma and injury; furthermore, it also helps in the prevention of excessive bleeding during and posts labour.
So, administering heparin and aspiring will reverse this natural physiological state of the pregnant woman, putting her in a much more vulnerable state than before, which may very well trigger a threatened miscarriage to occur.
There is another type of antibody that is in play in the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage
According to the patents: US7674590B2 & EP1722225B1, which has been approved and awarded in over 30 countries within the US, European Union and China, Dr Chen Fenglin, who is the researcher and the owner of the patents, has discovered that there is a specific physical component that acts as an immunological barrier for the developing embryo, known as the: Fibronectin Layer. Furthermore, there is in-fact an antibody that is in play in the occurrence of recurrent miscarriages, but it is not APS, but another family of antibodies known as antinuclear antibodies (ANAs). They are named as anti-embryonic antibodies, and they act upon the specific chromosome inside nucleus of the embryonic cells, that is responsible for the production of the fibronectin layer. The absence or damage of this layer is what triggers recurrent miscarriages to happen. It is also determined that over 75% of unexplained miscarriages are directly caused by this factor.
The levels of anti-embryonic antibodies can be easily diagnosed, and can be treated with a gene vaccine that neutralizes the immune reaction. Accuracy and efficacy of the diagnosis and treatment for this type of miscarriage is up to 95%. More details on the diagnosis and treatment can be found within the patent itself. Although APS is responsible for the autoimmune diseases and its several serious complications, but it is not responsible for the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage. Blood clotting is in fact a natural physiological phenomenon during pregnancy and the real cause is due to the absence or damaged fibronectin layer that is the immune barrier of the embryo.
