Endometriosis causes recurrent miscarriage – Antai Hospital

Overview

Dr Chen Fenglin of Beijing Antai Hospital has discovered that Endometriosis can lead to recurrent immunological miscarriage. Endometriosis is the condition where the tissue that usually lines the inner part of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

Endometriosis can be categorized into two types depending on where they are found:

  1. If the tissue grows in the ovaries. (causing chocolate cysts)
  2. If the tissue grows in the uterine cavity outside the ovaries. (causing lesions)

Where the endometrial tissue grows and spreads will lead to different conditions with varying severity. For example:

  • If it grows in the muscle walls of the uterus, it will lead to Adenomyosis.
  • If it grows in the ovaries, it will lead to Endometrioma.

How are the two types of Endometriosis different?

  1. If the endometrial tissue grows in the ovaries, it causes Endometrioma (chocolate cysts).

Endometrioma is a more severe and common form of Endometriosis, where benign cysts grow in the ovaries. They are called chocolate cysts because the cysts are fluid-filled endometriomas that have a chocolate-like appearance.

The 3-common characteristic of Endometrioma is:

  1. It does not cause menstrual pain.
  2. It directly affects the maturation and quality of the oocytes (eggs in the ovaries).
  3. It affects the formation of the corpus luteum. (leading to luteal insufficiency).

Due to characteristics of Endometrioma, it adversely affects the development and growth of the fetus or fertilized egg, causing fetal demise or an early miscarriage.

  1. If the endometrial tissue grows outside the ovaries, it can cause lesions.

This condition is where the tissue is growing outside the uterus (e.g., Fallopian tube, tissues lining the pelvis area, etc.), forming lesions

The three common characteristics of lesions are:

  1. It can cause painful periods
  2. It can form thick fibrous bands, causing the surrounding tissues and organs to stick together in the pelvic cavity.
  3. It has its paracrine function, which affects the development of the oocyte, the implantation, and the fertilization of the embryo. (may lead to a biochemical pregnancy)

If you are pregnant and have lesions caused by Endometriosis, it may lead to a potential fetal demise or an early miscarriage.

How does Endometriosis cause Immunological recurrent miscarriage?

If you have Endometriosis, which caused a history of induced abortions and miscarriages, you may have a high risk of developing recurrent immunological miscarriage.

During your D&C procedure, the fetal cells that contain paternal genes may have entered the mother’s body. An immune response is generated, and the body develops anti-embryonic antibodies. During your subsequent pregnancies, your developing embryo or fetus will be “attacked” by your immune system, which will cause fetal demise or early miscarriage.

Symptoms

  • Painful periods (note: chocolate cysts do not cause painful periods)
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Infertility
  • History of recurrent miscarriages (RSA) and biochemical pregnancies.

Diagnosis

  • CA125 test.
  • B-scan to check for the presence of chocolate cysts in both ovaries.
  • Operative Laparoscopy. It is the most effective method to diagnose and also treat Endometriosis
  • Radiography (X-ray imaging) to check for adhesions in the pelvic cavity
  • Test for the presence of anti-embryonic antibodies.

Treatment

To effectively treat Endometriosis and prevent future miscarriages, Antai Hospital will provide a comprehensive treatment based on the following 3 points:

  1. For the treatment of Endometriosis:
  • We use specialized Antai 3D-laparoscopy to remove chocolate cysts from the ovaries.
  • We use 3D-laparoscopy to remove the lesion in the uterine cavity.
  1. For luteal insufficiency:
  • Progesterone supplementation will be administered for the first three months until the placenta is fully formed and functional to sustain the fetus.
  1. Immunological factors:
  • If you test positive for the presence of anti-embryonic antibodies, Antai Hospital will administer our highly effective patented immunotherapy to prevent future immunological recurrent miscarriage.
