Premature Ovarian Insufficiency & Recurrent Miscarriage – Antai Hospital

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency and Recurrent Miscarriage

Premature ovarian insufficiency or primary ovarian insufficiency refers to women who have deteriorating ovarian functions before the age of 40. Your ovaries stop producing healthy amounts of estrogen and release irregular and low quantities of eggs. The low level of estrogen can cause thinning of the endometrium (lining of the uterus). A healthy and thick

Endometrial lining is necessary for the implantation of the embryo. Women with such conditions have difficulty conceiving and likely to suffer a pregnancy loss.

This condition is also easily confused with menopause. A woman suffering from POI can still have menstrual periods, though irregular, and can even get pregnant. A woman with menopause no longer has periods and cannot get pregnant.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms for premature ovarian insufficiency include:

  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Irregular periods
  • Low sex drive
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Miscarriage

Diagnosis

B-ultrasonography is a standard test to determine the current thickness and morphology of the endometrium. It will also be used to determine the maturation rate of the ovarian follicles. Usually, a slow rate indicates an ovarian insufficiency. Lastly, B-ultrasound can assess and compare the level of synchrony between the maturation of the endometrium and the follicles. Asynchrony is a clear indication of ovarian insufficiency.

Our doctors will also do a standard endocrinology report to determine your estrogen levels.

Treatment

Our doctors at Antai Hospital will administer a proper dosage of contraceptives to the patient. Contraceptives such as Diane-35 will stop the ovaries from releasing follicles, allowing the ovaries to heal and rest for 3 to 6 months, and increases the ovaries’ storage capabilities.

After this “resting period,” your ovaries will be back to healthy capabilities, releasing follicles regularly, and your endometrium wall will thicken as normal in sync with your menstrual period.

These contraceptives are made with a combination of hormones that have minimal side effects and do not disrupt the internal hormonal balance.

One of the most common wrong treatments administered to patients suffering from premature ovarian insufficiency is estrogen supplementation.

It may sound intuitive since estrogen deficiency can be solved by supplementing estrogen. It also achieves the same effect of ceasing the release of follicles from the ovaries. But unlike contraceptives, it will cause significant hormonal imbalance in the patient with adverse effects.

Note:

Premature ovarian insufficiency can cause multiple miscarriages, which leads to recurrent immunological miscarriages. This is considered a multi-factor miscarriage complex, which means more than two or more factors are in-play, driving the miscarriage to occur.

Here at Antai, our doctors treat this multi-factor miscarriage by first treating your premature ovarian insufficiency and then administer our immunotherapy to achieve effective treatment and prevent future recurrence.
