Hyperemesis Gravidarum: Common Misinformation and Misconceptions – Antai Hospital

Introduction on Hyperemesis Gravidarum:

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is distant cousin of the common pregnancy complication: Morning Sickness. Although commonly confused to be one of the same things, however the two are drastically different in both cause, symptoms, and severity to both mother and child during pregnancy. This rare and life-threatening disorder only occurs during gestation and only to less than 1-2% of pregnant women around the world. It never occurs outside of pregnancy and causes symptoms so severe that these pregnant woman contemplates suicide and pregnancy termination. It is a disorder that brings neurological, cardiovascular, thoracic, and systemic complications

However, due to the rarity of this disorder, many healthcare institutions, and doctors, including nurses and midwives do not seem to put and emphasis on it accurate and timely management. Many refuse to take it seriously, due to either lack of knowledge or they believe it does not exist, and that these HG sufferers are simply making up their symptoms. As absurd as it sounds, these scenarios are no strangers to HG suffers and survivors.

Cause:

Due to its rarity, there exists many different theories on the cause of Hyperemesis Gravidarum. However, many theories exist in the world, currently none aside from Antai Hospital can effectively treat the condition (see management of HG below).

With over 2 decades of studying and research of HG, Antai Hospital understands that the underlying cause of HG is due to occurrence of a phenomenon known as “central sensitization”, triggered by the binding of HCG molecules with abnormally present M1 receptors within the systemic body of the patient. These m1 receptors exist systemically in many organs and glands, such as the medulla oblongata, lungs, salivary glands, and many other places.

Now, why do these mothers develop these abnormal receptors that binds with HCG, we believe it is purely a genetic component, and very often these patients have a family history of HG. We cannot say for sure yet, but the evidence seems to indicate that it is an inherited disorder.

Symptoms:

  • Severe vomiting (blood & bile)
  • Nausea
  • Chronic headaches
  • Emotional instability
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of weight during pregnancy
  • Uncontrollable salivation
  • Dehydration
  • Unable to keep food down
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Heartburn
  • Electrolyte Imbalance

Management:

Here at Antai Hospital, we have formulated a highly effective treatment that is different than conventional treatment. This medication is an antagonistic blocker, that blocks the abnormal M1 receptors. This treatment is called the HCG-Desensitizer and is administered intravenously into the patient’s bloodstream. Course of treatment is around 1-4 injections, and within 24hours patient can see significant recovery to the point that she is able to eat, drink and sleep with no interference, and can also begin a safe pregnancy journey.

Misconceptions & Misinformation regarding HG:

  1. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is not life-threatening:

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is currently widely considered to be non-life-threatening, however, here at Antai Hospital we have personally witnessed how Hyperemesis can induce stroke, seizures, epilepsy, Wernicke encepalopathy and other life-threatening complications. The severe vomiting of blood and bile also is a cause for mortality if appropriate treatment is not received in time.

  • Hyperemesis Gravidarum is psychological

Hyperemesis is very often dismissed and not taken seriously due to it being treated us “made up” or “in their mind” by many healthcare professionals. Sometimes HG patients are blamed for exaggerating their symptoms and experience dismissal by their loved ones and family. There is simply insufficient awareness within the field of OBGYN for HG.

  • Current Management of Hyperemesis is effective

Many healthcare institutions currently offer remedy that only sufficiently suppresses the symptoms to a certain degree. Common medication prescribed include anti-nausea medications and IV-fluids They also suggest controlling the diet by avoid certain foods and drinking plenty of water, which only can do so much. The Hyperemesis still persists throughout the entire pregnancy and current managements are not effective in treating it.
